Robots, witchcraft and puppets: SummerWorks music 2015

The SummerWorks Performance Festival is taking over Toronto’s theatres right now (see our review here), but there’s something for music fans too.

Here’s what we saw this weekend:

On Friday night, JOOJ (Sook-Yin Lee and Adam Litovitz) played an hour-long set after spending a full 24 hours holed up in the venue. Their stir crazy translated into a subtly wacky performance, complete with slumber party snacks and a pile of sleeping bags.

Animalia turned the room into a witching circle on Saturday night, playing an impressive five back-to-back shows. Each intimate performance had the audience mask themselves and cast a worry-banishing spell, and her powerful energy stayed strong throughout the full five hours.

The weekend wrapped up with an over-the-top collaborative performance by Most People and space robot band Matrox, complete with puppets by Andrew Lamb and other visual delights by Roxanne Ignatius. The star of the show was definitely the giant puppet with glowing eyes, which looked like a cross between a sock puppet and a blanket fort.

More to come.
