SummerWorks Review: The Hum

THE HUM

Rating: NNN

The Hum, a look at the interconnectedness of all things, is a personal and intimate family affair, with musician John Gzowski, dancer Julia Aplin and their daughter, Jenny Aplin, offering songs, text, movement and projected artwork to discuss their vacations, hobbies and daily life.

The result is an unpretentious, idyllic work played out on their sofa and through various projections and films that will draw some of their appreciative friends into the theatre the number of preteens in the audience is rare for a SummerWorks show.

There are moments of charm for others, too, including a singalong, a look at their attempts to raise pet snails and toads, and a dance that links the English and Latin names of familiar plants.
