SNOW WHITE IN BLACK & WHITE (Teatret Patrasket, Denmark). Ages six to 10. May 27 at 12:15 pm, May 28 at 1 pm, May 29 at 2:15 pm. Brigantine Room. Rating: NNN
Parental cautions overheard before Teatret Patrasket's production of Snow White In Black & White : "Honey, I think she only sings because Disney made her." "You know, the Queen was never really a hag." And my favourite: "No, there's no Dopey. You know that that was all pretend, right? And that this is different? Do you have to pee?"
Wrong on all counts, save for Dopey (because, yes, Mom, Dopey was a figment of Walt Disney's imagination).
This Danish production blends music, comedy and movement to tell the tale of the girl and the apple the way it should be told. That is, complete with the wicked stepmum eating a boar's heart whole, thinking it's that of the princess - and relishing the last drops with an audible slurp.
The kids, needless to say, devour the antics of the two players and the humour, spookiness and gore of the original tale with zest. A great grown-up show for a first or second date, too.
