Passion of Christ

JESUS CHRIST: THE LOST YEARS by Ryan Gladstone, Katherine Sanders and Bruce Horak, directed by Horak (Monster Theatre). Jan 11 at 5:15 pm, Jan 12 at 7:15 pm, Jan 13 at 3:15 pm. Rating: NNNN

Monster Theatre fills in the “missing years” of Christ’s life from age 12 to 30 in this silly, irreverent cartoon of a show that’s full of verbal and theatrical acrobatics and some very creative exegesis.

The wild ride of a plot is carefully constructed and cleverly staged (by co-writer/director Bruce Horak, who also filled in for Ryan Gladstone in the performance I saw).

The performers play everyone from the Goddess Kali to Elvis Presley with ease (Horak, understandably, sometimes missed a beat).

The production has lost some intimacy in the move from Theatre Passe Muraille’s Mainstage to Factory’s, but the live band adds energy and the wit (think Chuck Jones does the Old Testament), although repetitive, never lags.
