near the end of kevin sheard's new play Jonesing , one character screams "Jesus... fucking... Christ!" It's one of the few statements the audience can genuinely relate to while shifting their bums through this shrill, overlong and ludicrous work.
Conceived as a heavy drama that relies on elements of Greek tragedy, Jonesing tells the story of a gay pickup that results in an overdose and surprises about the genealogical backgrounds of both men.
Into this Queer Eye For The Oedipal Guy mix, Sheard's added rants about religion, mental illness, rape and the cyclical nature of dysfunction.
There are moments of humour in the script, performances and production, but if the writer's earnest program notes are to believed, these are unintentional.
In trying to counsel us on serious issues, he's inadvertently become a camp counsellor.
