Here’s a brief look at a few now-familiar faces who got an early start in Buddies’ Rhubarb patch.

ANN-MARIE MACDONALD

You know her for:

Internationally successful novels Fall On Your Knees (an Oprah pick!) and The Way The Crow Flies, deliciously humorous plays Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) and Belle Moral, sharp acting (Top Girls).

Nancy Drew (Goes In Search Of Her Missing Mother), written with Beverly Cooper (1984)

SEAN REYCRAFT

You know him for:

The screenplay for the gay-themed Breakfast With Scot and edgy TV scripts for The Eleventh Hour and Degrassi: The Next Generation that combine comic moments and emotional insights.

Pop Song (1998)

MOYNAN KING

You know her for:

Directing the Hysteria Festival, as former Rhubarb director and current associate artist at Buddies, where she makes good use of her discerning feminist eye and keen sense of dramaturgy.

MARK LONERGAN

You know him for:

Running acclaimed physical theatre troupe Parallel Exit in New York City and as NOW cover boy when he returned to Toronto to direct Daniel MacIvor’s nearly wordless play Jump.

Zed’s Dead Baby (1995)

ANNA CHATTERTON and EVALYN PARRY

You know them for:

Tongue-in-cheek but emotionally truthful works like Frances, Mathilda And Tea. Chatterton’s also writing opera libretti and Parry is director of youth initiatives at Buddies.

Clean Irene & Dirty Maxine (2002)

DANIEL KARASIK

You know him for:

The well-received In Full Light at last year’s SummerWorks, a show both funny and threatening in its look at intimacy.

Rhubarb show:

Night’s Swift Dragons (2004), part of the fest’s Under 21 series, written when he was 17.

MICHAEL REDHILL

You know him for:

Acclaimed novels Martin Sloane and Consolation as well as the gripping, nuanced plays Building Jerusalem and Goodness.

Lake Nora Arms (1996)
