In a voice that is immediately funny and relatable, Julia Lederer has crafted a quirky comedy about how anti-social the modern world has become.
Annabelle (Lederer) falls in love (or, more accurately becomes totally obsessed) with George (Robin Archer) a man she only sees every day on the subway system, and the two begin a bizarre correspondence via geocached cassette tapes. Interspersed are scenes that follow George's mother (Martha Ross) as she fails miserably at speed dating, and shares her deepest feelings with an online psychology program.
The show's strength is Lederer's skill for writing Annabelle's dialogue, which is hilariously foot-in-mouth awkward in public, and loaded with dialed-to-the-extreme metaphors when she's privately venting her frustrations to her tape recorder. If this show gets a remount, there's lots of potential for adding characters or situations into the mix (more about George would be great), but as it stands now it's a cute piece that effectively articulates the anxiety that we're losing our ability to communicate without the aid of machines.
