Top Chef's new dim sum resto opens Friday
Although the SoHo Metropolitan Hotel where Susur Lee’s new dim sum restaurant is located sent out a press release yesterday saying the highly anticipated beanery would launch later “this spring,” NOW can reveal that Luckee (328 Wellington W, at Peter, 416-935-0400, luckeerestaurant.com, @LuckeeTO) opens its doors for dinner this Friday April 4th.
Friday’s spring, right?
Luckee takes over the space formerly inhabited by Senses. Long-time design partners Brenda Bent and Karen Gable have given the 120-seat room their patented high-Chinoiserie look and superstar chef Lee has created a carte that’s both authentic and cutting-edge.
“My sui mai dumplings, for example, include a little bit of Chinese orange peel, almost like yuzu and my har gow have ginger to take away the fishiness of the shrimp,” says Lee. “And my cheung fun rice rolls come with a crispy rice tuile instead of the usual Chinese donut.
“I want Luckee to change the way Toronto experiences dim sum. You won’t have to drive all the way to Markham. The lighting won’t be too bright and we’ll have a good wine list.”
Will there be cart service?
“Absolutely! Some of the younger generation consider dim-sum carts old-fashioned but I think they’re the coolest part!”
