A clever value-added marketing gimmick, the bonus DVD tacked on current-release CDs often amounts to little more than a couple of out-of-date video clips. That's what you get with the Hives retrospective comp Your New Favourite Band, which covers the best tracks from the Swedish garage kings' prior albums and singles. But in addition to the videos for Main Offender, Hate To Say I Told You So and Die, Alright!, there's a revealing television rockumentary shot during their Veni Vedi Vicious tour of California, as well as MTV2-shot performance footage from a show in Towson, Maryland. For all the Hives' rambunctious onstage antics, the unintentionally comical behind-the-scenes footage of the five unsmiling Swedes - staring blankly for a photo shoot, reading a newspaper and giving monosyllabic responses to baffled radio interviewers - puts them high on the list of the most boring lunks in rock history. For a split second, it looks as though they might be getting into some nefarious shenanigans when guitarist Nicholaus Arson starts crawling under a table, but we soon discover he's just looking for a missing sock. Sadly, the sock's discovery actually proves to be one of the DVD's highlights.
