FRIDAY JAN. 27:

AGO Friday Nights: Celebrating New Exhibitions

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is hosting a museum-wide celebration as they welcome new art and give a nod to current exhibitions with an evening of talks, tours and live music, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“Hear David Ruben Piqtoukun speak within his Radical Remembrance solo exhibition,” their site reads. “Meanwhile artists Laurie Kang and Aaron Jones, two of the ten artists featured in We Are Story: The Canada Now Photography Acquisition, speak about their works in this exciting new group exhibition. Inside Denyse Thomasos: just beyond, Trinidadian jazz saxophonist Jesse Ryan will perform, there will be a display of rarely seen Michael Snow prints, photographs, and ephemera pulled from the AGO Library & Archives and Prints & Drawings vaults.”

DJ Vibrant Matter will spin tracks at the event and there is a cash bar available.

The Stupid Good Comedy Show

Get your weekend off to a good start on Friday night with The Stupid Good Comedy Show

at SoCap Comedy Theatre.

Doors open at 7:45 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

There’s an improv class if you want to head there early, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. called Improv For Singles and New Friends.

A Retro 80s and 90s Video Dance Party 

Head to a night of dancing and music at The Rec Room in Downtown Toronto.

It’ll be from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and in addition to party anthems on the dance floor, they’ll even play hit music videos from the decades on a giant screen. 

Entry is just $10. 

Crunchy Tigers Comedy – Hare-y New Year

For a laugh, try Toronto’s Asian-infused sketch comedy show.

The show features Tony Kim, Suzy Sin Park, Shaharah Gaznabbi, Kenneth Cheung, John Taylor and Gerald Yeung, with special guest comics Sarah Boston and D.K. Phan.

It’ll be held at the Social Capital Theatre from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $20. 

Friday Night Bar Hopping on West Queen West 

The meeting point for a night of bar hopping is at Dog & Bear at 1100 Queen St W., starting at 9 p.m.

When you get to the bar, the bartender will let you know where the event group is. 

A heads-up, though, the second bar of the night, Lobby, has a cover charge and a dress code. The event planners say if you don’t get in, the group is not responsible for you. 

Gay AF Late Nite

From 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Gay AF Comedy is hosting a new monthly show for “queer stand-up stans and anyone who likes their comedy served late at night.”

It’s happening at Comedy Bar, located at 945 Bloor Street West.

Tickets are $18 online and $23 at the door.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in Concert

For fans of Middle Earth, this event at Meridian Hall is from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Howard Shore’s Academy Award-winning score is performed live to the epic motion picture in HD. The film will also be shown with English subtitles. 

Tickets are available, though they’re more of an expensive option, starting at $252.

Professionals Networking

At Black Pearl from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Hip Haus is presenting a professional networking event.

On their site, Hip Haus says they’re “an organization that exists to empower young and experienced professionals alike in the GTA and help the growth of local business.”

Tickets are $10, and they say you should dress to impress. The event is for people 19 years old and up.

Make sure to have your business cards or LinkedIn accounts ready to go.

The Hunger Games Shout-Along – Chaotic Edition

At the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, comedy-duo Carley Thorne and Meredith Mullen are hosting a “battle royale of who can yell the loudest over the film that inspired us all to get into archery.”

Tickets are $15.

SATURDAY,  JAN. 28

Loudmouth

Head to a screening at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema and watch a chronicle of Reverend Al Sharpton’s work for social change through the years. 

Loudmouth presents never-before-seen footage, with tickets available for $15.

Saturday’s screening is from 9:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. 

Sashay Escape!

A RuPaul’s Drag Race based escape room! 

Here, you can test your knowledge on 14 seasons of the popular show, including all the tea on the queens, snatch games, lip-syncs and more.

You can book your spot at Trivia Escape Rooms. Time slots are from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Afrophilia

If you’re looking for an art-filled Saturday, go see Afrophilia, described as, “a love letter to Black people.”

“This work is inspired by the generation of young Black people who are driving a shift in self perception and changing our global consciousness of Blackness to appreciate its immense value, diversity, and beauty,” the website says. 

From 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. see the art at the Toronto Sculpture Garden at 115 King St E.

This installation is presented by Black Artists’ Networks in Dialogue Gallery and Cultural Centre in partnership with the City of Toronto.

Puppy Love Yoga

A relaxing yoga practice with the cute chaos of puppies.

Held at the Royal Canadian Legion (Coxwell), you can book a one-hour class for $39.99. 

Apres Ski Party

Toybox is hosting an apres ski party where you can dress in snow gear to get in for free before midnight.

Music is by resident DJ Trapment, and the party is from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Sponsored by Ciroc, there will be winter giveaways and a snow lodge photobooth.

After Werk LGBTQ Dance Party 

Hosted at Buddies in Bad Times, a wild dance party with house remixes will be held, with doors opening at 10:30 p.m.

This LGBTQ+ dance party is hosted by Barbie Jo Bontemps, with performances by Destiny Doll and music by DJ Sumation.

Cover is $10 before 11 p.m., and $15 after.

Winter Wonderland at Rebel

From 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. head to Rebel for an icy Winter Wonderland filled with mythical creatures, ice skaters, dancers floating in the air and Ciroc Hot Cocoa.

The Naked Truth Comedy Show

This show is described as a night when stand-up comedians reveal their darkest secrets.

It’s from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 945 Bloor St W. 

Seeing the Invisible: An Outdoor Augmented Reality Exhibition

This acclaimed augmented reality art exhibition is in partnership with the City of Toronto and Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation.

The outdoor experience includes thirteen augmented reality works by internationally recognized artists.

You can see the exhibit from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday Night Music

For a lowkey night out, listen to live music starting at 9 p.m. and drink craft beer at Folly Brewpub. 

The lineup is all local artists. 

SUNDAY, JAN. 29

Soul Sunday

Head to a 60s and 70s event at The Painted Lady. 

At The Painted Lady from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., enjoy all vinyl sweet soul, deep funk, rare grooves and more from DJ Cher. Complimentary soul food will be avilable while quantities last.

Poetry Open Mic

Join host David Bateman at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre for their first poetry open mic night of 2023.

Doors open at 4 p.m., sign-up is at 4:30 p.m., and open mic begins at 5 p.m.

Organizers ask poets to keep their readings between five and seven minutes.

There is no cover to enter. 

Music Bingo

Glasgow Celtic Supporters Club is hosting music bingo from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., where numbers are replaced with songs of all genres and “prizes are handed out like candy.”

Bottles of beer are $4.50 to $6.00, drafts are $6.50, bar rails are $4.50 to $6.50 and Guinness is $6.50, with all proceeds going to the Glasgow Celtic Supporters Club.

It’s $15 to play. 

Intrigue at the Museum: A ROM Mystery 
From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Royal Ontario Museum is hosting a mystery scavenger hunt, where participants seek to solve a mysterious murder, with the museum’s collections holding the key. 

Tickets are $45.
