Albert Koehl

Who Albert Koehl, staff lawyer at Ecojustice adjunct prof in natural resources law at Osgoode Hall Law School former prosecutor with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

Claim to fame Champion of safe streets and founder of Bells on Bloor – not to mention that he rides his bike, equipment in tow, to pickup hockey games with his mates. (“It’s a good warm-up for the game, and I never have to look for parking.”)

For a guy who does his cycling advocacy on the side, Koehl has covered a lot of ground. He was instrumental in pushing the province into calling the recent coroner’s inquest into cycling deaths in Ontario. He also took the city to the Ontario Labour Relations Board in 2009, arguing that Toronto’s not doing enough to design streets so cyclists and pedestrians are protected.

Words to ride by “I see cycling as a social justice issue – as well as an obvious part of the solution to pressing issues such as climate change, congestion and lack of physical fitness. It shouldn’t have to cost people $10,000 just to participate in our transport system.”

Peddling these days Cycle And Sole, on May 11, a walk and ride celebrating Mother’s Day and demanding greater safety for everyone on our roads.
