Allie

Allie’s cosmic vibrations continue expanding in pleasant ways on the follow-up to her debut EP from 2013. Moonlust finds the Toronto-based R&B singer/ songwriter refining her reflective sound with carefully deployed harmonies and gently psychedelic atmospherics courtesy of producers Elaquent, Nick Wisdom and Da-P. When Allie opened for Chicago rapper Tink at NXNE earlier this summer, her live sound was markedly tighter and richer than it was when she played with Kelela at Massey Hall a year prior. These four tracks are proof that she’s been upping her game in the studio as well.

Whether singing about the beginning or the end of love, a strong sense of euphoria comes across in how Allie’s melodies seem to float along the busy, shuffling rhythms and sonorous bass. It’s actually quite lulling, especially when the music gradually takes on darker dimensions by final song Keep On. It’s a subtle, fleeting effect – the kind best appreciated when lying idle and staring at nothing in particular. It’s electronic music that sends a strong signal to unplug.

Top track: Tundra

Allie plays What’s In The Box at the Drake Hotel on December 30.
