Asiansploitation

Rating: NNNNN

Stand-ups like Russell Peters and Margaret Cho have proven that comedy isn’t just a black-and-white issue. Now groups like Fade To Brown and Asiansploitation are spreading the word that sketch comedy can be colour-coded, too. The 10-member Asiansploitation troupe has been around for a year and a half and add some spice to this weekend’s Dim Sum festivities at Harbourfront.

You’re called Asiansploitation. Who or what are you guys exploiting?

A sweatshop full of child comedy labourers is grinding out sketches for us right now!

There are a lot of you onstage. How do you fit into dressing rooms?

Japanese subway car pushers. And no sexual harassment policy.

Sandra Oh or Masi Oka?

Can’t we have both? Oh, well, we’ll go with Adrienne Clarkson then.

Favourite dim sum place?

Rol San at 323 Spadina. For more fun, try the secret back portion of the restaurant on weekends.

Stupidest Asian stereotype?

That we all drive Honda Civics.

Funniest Asian stereotype?

That we all drive Honda Civics.

Why aren’t there more Asians in sketch comedy?

The shame it brings to our families. Our parents wanted us to be improvisers and stand-ups instead.

Why no Kim Jong-Il sketch?

Look for “Illin’ With K-Jong, Da Baaaaad Mang From Da Pyongyang” … coming soon!
