Bats: A Batty Adventure

August 15, 2023 @ 8:00 pm9:30 pm

Join Alex Israel, MSc (Research Lead – Native Bat Conservation Program) for an indoor talk and followed by outdoor walk to explore the fascinating world of bats. We will begin with an indoor presentation before heading outdoors for an evening nature walk through Downsview Park. While a variety of creatures come out at night – this program will focus on our nocturnal, flying mammals – BATS! The world of bats is wonderful – so come learn about these amazing creatures and how scientists study them in cities. While we may not encounter bats on the walk, you’ll learn lots of tips and tricks to help find them in the summer. You’ll also get the chance to see some of the equipment used to track bats. And who knows what nighttime urban critters we may encounter along the way! So, pack your head lamps and flashlights and come on down for an evening of urban nature.

The indoor portion will include an introduction to the various bat species found in Ontario, the threats they face, and why we should be concerned about them, followed by an exploration of how the Toronto Zoo’s Native Bat Conservation Program is working to help them, and some of the success stories to date. The Toronto Zoo’s Native Bat Conservation Program is one of the zoo’s Species Recovery programs doing “boots on the ground” conservation to keep wild species on the map in Ontario. This program is for open to participants of all ages.

Pets are not permitted at this program. Service animals are always welcome.

Our Education programs are proudly supported by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

Please note that this session will be held only in English.
