BLUE MOUNTAIN
Tonight It’s Now Or Never (DCN)
Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

Unjustly pigeonholed as an alt-country band, Blue Mountain prove just how misleading the appellation really is in this fired-up live performance captured on Tonight It’s Now Or Never. Recorded at Schuba’s in Chicago on March 11, 2001 — just months before announcing their breakup — the double-disc set shows both Blue Mountain’s frenzied Crazy Horse swagger and their Mississippi blues-informed folk roots sensitivity. Considering what must’ve been going on internally, songs like Laurie Stirratt’s When You’re Not Mine, sung by her soon-to-be-ex, Carey Hudson, take on a special poignancy. This is what’s known as going out in style.
