Bonnie Raitt

Rating: NNN

Her distinctive, gritty voice is at its smouldering best 30 years into her career, and her sultry slide work still rings with the energy of a 20-year-old upstart, but Bonnie Raitt’s real smarts are applied to the decisions she makes. Since she doesn’t write many tunes, Raitt relies on careful song selection, and while she nails the obligatory ballads, it’s the funky rhythm breaks of Jon Cleary’s Love On One Condition and Sharp/Batteau’s Crooked Crown that register, giving the album a nice, easy pace. Perhaps her greatest weapon is her choice of producers. Don Was was pivotal in making 89’s Nick Of Time a four-Grammy winner, and with Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Pearl Jam) co-producing, Souls Alike may see similar accolades.
