Bright Black

Cherrywine play the Bambu by the Lake
Friday (June 20). Rating: NN

There’s something uncomfortable about artists disappearing into the ether and suddenly returning years later reinvented as someone else, particularly if you never really trusted them in the first place. For all their urban cool, there was always something forced and artificial about Digable Planets’ early 90s jazz/bop/hiphop. That sensation continues with Cherrywine, in which the Digables MC formerly known as Butterfly stumbles over a Sly Stone record and decides to reinvent himself as a funky, smoked-out soul star. Bright Black is a mix of hiphop and rock that never really gels as either. There are lots of airy riffs and spacey rhymes, but like Digable Planets, this is more about vibe and posturing than actual songs.
