Jos&eacute Contreras and his band of talented stoners are back to spread the good karma and sweet sweet love, bless their hearts. Sweet Confusion has more gritty bite than the hook-packed pop of BDR’s last disc, 2001’s Good Morning Beautiful. This time ’round, Contreras and co. set their sights on a sweaty, summery mess of amped-up garagey rock that owes a debt to both Detroit soul and Hendrix-style swirly psychedelia. Lest you think they’ve gone all serious rawker, Contreras throws in his customary blissed-out lyrical rambles, and a peace sign/group hug vibe pervades the album. Bouncy summertime fun.

By Divine Right launch Sweet Confusion at the Horseshoe Tuesday (July 20).
