A by-election for Toronto’s next mayor will be held on June 26.

The City of Toronto released details about the by-election on Thursday.

Nominations will open on April 3 at 8:30 a.m. and will close on May 12 at 2 p.m.

Advance voting will occur between June 8 and 13. Electors will also be provided with the option to vote by mail.

During city council’s next meeting in March, council will consider recommendations from the city clerk to formally declare the Office of Mayor vacant and to pass a bylaw requiring a by-election.

“The timing of the by-election is determined independent of Council by the City Clerk. Under the Municipal Elections Act, the City Clerk fixes nomination day (i.e. close of nominations) between 30 and 60 days after the passing of the bylaw declaring an office vacant. The by-election occurs 45 days after nomination day,” city staff said in a news release.

The city typically doesn’t announce by-election dates prior to council passing a bylaw, but the city clerk “considers it to be in the best interests of the City, candidates and electors to announce the applicable by-election dates as early as possible.”

City staff say the by-election will be held in a similar manner to the last general election held in Oct. 2022

“The estimated budget for the by-election is approximately $13 million compared to the actual expenses of $14.5 million for the October 24, 2022 general election,” staff wrote.

The by-election comes after former Mayor John Tory resigned last Friday, following his admission about an affair with an office staffer during the pandemic.

Tory was first elected mayor in 2014 and was re-elected for his third term only four months ago.

Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie is the acting mayor until a new leader is elected in the by-election. McKelvie has said she will not run for mayor.

Tory’s top challenger in the last election, urban planner Gil Penalosa, said he would be running for mayor again.
