Car Seat Headrest melted six-strings for an hour

CAR SEAT HEADREST at the Silver Dollar Room, Tuesday, December 1. Rating: NNN

After a snippet of Daniel Johnston’s True Love Will Find You In The End, Car Seat Headrest singer Will Toledo lulled a packed Silver Dollar into The Ending Of Dramamine, an epic song extending well over 10 minutes and full of stomped-out breaks and swirling, hypnotic bass lines. “I can’t hear a thing now,” Toledo almost whispered to the hushed listeners. “I guess I belong to me now.”

A reverent audience is a sight to behold at the gritty bar, and until near the end of the Seattle band’s hour-long set, everyone was on their best behaviour. Tunes from 2015’s critically acclaimed Teens Of Style album (out on Matador), like the cooled-down No Passion and the fantastic Times To Die, saw Toledo switching between a dull slacker drawl à la Julian Casablancas and a Spencer Krugesque yelp, all set to 90s-styled-indie-rock guitar bliss.

An hour was a bit long to watch the six-strings melt into each other, and the crowd thinned during the three-song run of Maud Gone, Los Borrachos and Oh! Starving. But the die-hards started a cuddly mosh pit during 2011’s aptly titled Bodys.
