What’s the best rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself? When She’s So Unusual came out, I was working with the WWF and doing these wild sketches on their shows. In one show, Captain Lou told me all women should stay barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, and my reaction was to beat him up. Of course, it was all part of the act. The next day on one of those national entertainment news shows, there was a very dramatic “real life segment” (kinda like what you see today about that poor kid Lindsay Lohan) titled “Cyndi Lauper goes berzerk!” They thought it was all real. It was hysterical.
Which actor would you want to play the lead in the film The Cyndi Lauper Story? I still haven’t gotten the role down myself. I’ll get back to ya on that one!
Which song do you wish you’d written and why? I think songs are gifts that artists share, and I’d hate to re-gift that seems so unfair. Songs are so precious to me, I can’t think that way. I know it’s not an actual answer to that question, but it’s really how I feel.
What part of your body do you like the least? I tend to have a love-hate affair with my eyelashes.
Are you concerned that people will assume you’re queer because you’ve put together the True Colours tour? I’m a gay man in a woman’s body – everyone knows that! Seriously, if people assume I’m queer, let them. I’d rather they know there are straight people who are concerned with things that affect the GLBT community and who celebrate that community – I am that type of person. I hate the us-and-them categories.
