The promo copy of the new Daft Punk album came with serious anti-piracy warnings and a digital watermark that would allow the record label to trace it back to me if I put it on a file-sharing network. This is all kind of funny, and too little too late – it was floating around the Internet long before my copy came, and fans have been sharply divided in their reviews so far. It was recorded over a mere six weeks, and the simple club-friendly arrangements are reminiscent of Homework-era Daft Punk, but with more of a contemporary dance-rock vibe. It’s big, dumb and cheesy, but that’s what made Daft Punk fun in the first place.
