Digging Roots

Rating: NNN

Fusions of blues and hip-hop have produced both impressive and disappointing results over the years, and this one is closer to the former. Produced by Kinnie Starr, Digging Roots are already enjoying a ton of buzz for this album, including six nominations at next month’s Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards (more than any other act this year).

The combination of styles works best here when they keep the vibes mellow and the arrangements sparse. When they add rock guitar heroics to the equation, they stray uncomfortably close to straight-up beer-commercial rock, but those moments are just occasional diversions from the deeper grooves that dominate the album.

Top track: Spring To Come

Digging Roots celebrate the release of We Are at the Mod Club Tuesday (October 13).
