DJ TLR made Bambi’s feel like a gritty warehouse party

DJ TLR and ÉBONY at Bambi’s, Thursday, December 3. Rating: NNNN

Toronto DJ/production duo Ébony have been playing more gigs out of town lately, which made their appearance at Bambi’s a bit of a homecoming party. Their blend of cold techno minimalism and warm soulful house has made for some strong recordings, and they take a similar approach to DJing. That balance of harder sounds and melodic moments was the perfect warm-up for Dutch headliner DJ TLR (aka Jeroen Van Der Star), whose vibes are more aggressive.

Van Der Star has been enjoying a second wave of popularity in recent years, as underground dance music trends shift back to the raw, noisy end of the spectrum. His label, Crème Organization, has an almost punk attitude, fusing elements of acid, industrial, techno, classic electro and early Chicago house. He didn’t get too abrasive at Bambi’s, and kept his set focused on the dance floor rather than on his experimental tendencies. It might be a tiny club, but he made it feel like a gritty late-night warehouse party.
