Makes sense that after 17 years, Donna Summer has finally recorded an album of new material since her early disco diva work has been embraced by a new generation of fans. Unfortunately, no one seems to have told her that it’s her synth-driven Giorgio Moroder-produced 70s joints that the kids are excited about.
Instead of updating her classic sound, she’s tried to put together a straightforward urban pop R&B album and doesn’t quite pull it off. Most of it sounds like it could have been written for any of the teen queen pop tarts, and as a result Crayons lacks personality. Unfortunately Summers’s voice and persona just don’t suit this material.
Donna Summer hits Casino Rama Tuesday and Wednesday (July 22 and 23).
