Eataly coming to Yorkville in 2019

The moment Italophiles have been awaiting for years is finally on the horizon: Eataly has announced it will be opening a Toronto location in 2019. The store, a joint project between the Italian food chain, Toronto’s own Terroni and Selfridges Group, will anchor a $100 million redevelopment of Yorkville’s Manulife Centre.

For the uninitiated: The massive Italian food marketplace has locations around the world, including New York, Chicago and Tokyo, and offers everything from groceries to hot food and cooking classes (so you can learn how to make your own pasta, load up on dried porcini, fresh bread and Piemontese beef, grab a doodad for your kitchen, and hit the focaccia stand for a bite on your way out). In a release this week, company reps promised to leverage their local ties for a “a truly distinct Toronto Eataly experience … Eataly is not a chain, it’s a family, and each location is distinct and highlights the city and people who reside there.”

If you’ve grown attached to the Bloor Street Diner, the Centre’s 35-year-old ground floor eatery, however, you’d best start saying your goodbyes. The incoming tenant will bump the restaurant from its home, and a letter recently sent to employees (which subsequently wound up on blogTO) advises staff that the diner’s last day of operations will be January 9, 2017.
