When this DVD of Eminem’s Anger Management Tour was filmed in 2002, 9 million Americans were buying up the Eminem Show. Seems like almost that many Shady worshippers (95 per cent of them white, which only gets weird when everyone’s chanting “White America!” over and over to the track) are out to see Em spitting through his catalogue with an American flag do-rag over his blond waves.
At the top of his live game here, Marshall Mathers has fully made the transition from his whiny Slim Shady LP-era flow to a stronger delivery. D12’s Proof is an ideal hype man. The show’s filmed expensively: lots of sweeping crane and crowd shots. Edited sharply, too, and the tour’s circus theme, while highly cheesy, is not intolerable.
What’s wack is when D12 come on. While it’s funny to see the number of black people in the room double when they join, we have to sit through four of their weak songs, not to mention an unwanted Obie Trice cameo. Then go to the DVD menu and watch D12 and Em goof off backstage. It gets tiresome, but the concert itself is good.
