BEYOND THE PERIMETER

T.O. turns into a social change organizing zone this week as the G20 (June 26, 27) summit approaches. Activists are prepping clown routines, painting banners and priming their policy smarts. Find your issue and get into the action, starting with the People’s Summit June 18 to 20, mostly at Ryerson.

The grassroots thinkathon, which features almost 200 sessions, kicks off Friday with Stories And Solutions From North And South, featuring Council of Canadians’ Maude Barlow, Victor Baez of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas, Brazil, Dorothy Ngoma, National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi and more. 6:30 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, a roster of global activists offers an awesome range of perspectives on subjects like The Economic Crisis: How We Got There, And Who Pays? Climate Change Through Women’s Eyes No Rights, No Rules: Migrant Workers In A Globalized World Behind The Rainbow – Fifty Years After Independence In Africa The Beehive Collective Presents Art-based Tools DIY Radical Street Bands Building Solidarity With The Democratic Labour Movement in Mexico and 192 others. A meeting on Harper’s Attacks On Reproductive Rights takes place June 21 (1 pm, 25 Cecil), and a march heads off an hour later (2 pm, Allan Gardens. Queering The G20 takes to the financial district on the evening of June 22. And on Wednesday (June 23), take a Toxic Tour Of Toronto (11 am, Alexandra Park, Dundas and Bathurst), and check out the People’s Assembly On Climate Justice (7 pm, 55 Gould.)

Or, also June 23, join a day-long seminar, Making The Case For Global Economic Governance, with former PM Paul Martin, CBC’s Don Newman, reps from the labour movement in South Africa, Canada, the U.S., Brazil and more (9 am to 5 pm, Park Hyatt, 4 Avenue Road register via webapp.mcis.utoronto.ca).

The Indigenous Day Of Action follows on Thursday (June 24) with a march (11 am, Queen’s Park) and A Night Of Solidarity With The Mapuche Peoples & All Our Indigenous Nations (8 pm, 25 Cecil).
