As a live act, GGD’s polyrhythmic brew is perplexing. Singer Lizzi Bougatsos’s disjointed gabble frustrates the hell out of me, and the band’s worldly avant-garde noise feels pretentious and unrehearsed. Thankfully, jamming the band’s new joint on the home hi-fi is another story. Sonically, Bougatsos is way down in the mix, and the instrumentation is a big stew of chiming synths, oddball percussion and shape-shifting noise. By the sounds of it, I’d venture to say they’ve got more exotic gear than a Balinese sex shop. Better yet, this Brooklyn-based outfit writes unique songs that are completely unclassifiable. Haunting and beautiful.
