A multi-instrumentalist best known for being Kate Tempest’s drummer, London, UK’s Georgia evokes a skittering, glazed-over slice of up-all-night club life on her moody, uneven debut. Bolstered by hip-hop flourishes and Yeezy levels of jarring distortion and discord, the young artist sounds raw, often oscillating between a tentative and assertive demeanour.
She certainly has an ear for current production flavours when it comes to building layered rhythm tracks. Be Ache is the kind of bold goth-techno that, on a gutsy day, Madonna might gravitate toward. Its sharp blasts of alien snares and synthesized melodies combine with a dramatic, urgent vocal. Nothing else here is as dynamic and compelling as Move Systems, a slight but fascinating call to arms that owes its spirit and tone to M.I.A.
But for every insistent dance song, there are sparse comedowns like Hold It and You that feel like a splash of cold water against sleep-deprived eyes. These, combined with cloudy love jams like Heart Wrecking Animals, provide a glimpse at Georgia’s true pop heart, which she, curiously, keeps wrapped tight in electro gauze.
