Gordon Lightfoot

Rating: NNN

After Gordon Lightfoot’s life-threatening abdominal aneurysm scare in September 2002, there was some question about whether the Can-folk icon would reach his 20th-album milestone. But Lightfoot has since recovered, and his new Harmony album (out Tuesday) finds him singing and picking in fine form. Where Harmony falls short is in the songwriting, where the brush with death seems to have brought out not only the feel-good reveries but also a new willingness to settle for the easy rhyme. Pleasant, perhaps, but definitely not up to Lightfoot’s own high standard.
