GORILLAZ

Rating: NNN

GORILLAZ Tomorrow Comes Today EP (Polydor) Rating: NNNNot as egregious as his forthcoming collection of African music, Blur shouter Damon Albarn’s most recent sidestep from the mundane world of pop superstardom is a cartoon band that makes triphop.

A Gorillaz album inexplicably featuring contributions from both Ibrahim Ferrer and Tina Frantz is due out this spring. In the meantime, this four-song EP features Albarn moaning and honking his melodica over the lurching space funk of Dan “The Automator” Nakamura. Nakamura’s beats are at once his most complex and commercial yet, while the appearance of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien on Rock Tha House pushes the project beyond a novelty act. Still, Gorillaz’ most interesting achievement so far might be their astonishingly complex Web site, www.gorillaz.com.MG
