Halston at the Horseshoe

What did big shot movie producers do before the iPad made it possible to flip through runway photos of the fashion company you invest in at the Horseshoe?

Who knows but there was Harvey Weinstein last night at the Queen Street concert club screening shots of Monday’s Halston show while waiting for Abigail Breslin and Alessandro Nivola to take the stage. Little Miss Sunshine herself and the actor best known by me for his role in Coco Avant Chanel played to a full house to promote festival flick Janie Jones.

“This is my first time playing for a live audience,” said Breslin as she sat down in front of the mic looking much less little miss anything than expected. Her quick set was followed by performances by Gemma Hayes and Patrick Watson.

But back to Halston and the couture coincidence that the Weinstein sighting happened the same night as a private showing of a doc on the designer. Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston screened at the Thompson Hotel for a small group of local designers, style editors and fashion week sponsors.

The film is full of amazing archival interviews and footage including one particular shot that set off our own fashion moment in the theatre. As the designer’s former assistant Ralph Rucci discussed a collection of bias cut, seamless dresses he worked on for Halston, we all noticed Shrimpton Couture vintage collector Cherie Federau sitting in the third row wearing a strikingly similar dress.

“Is that…,” I whispered.

“Yup,” she said looking chicly self-satisfied.
