Hawaii

Hawaii (Paper Bag) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

Hawaii oozes sex. Not the squelchy porn-beat lounge vibe you might hear in the grotto at a Playboy Mansion party or the grindy booty bump of sickening R&B grunters, but an icy postmodern eroticism that travels up your spine and gives you goosebumps. It’s hard to say precisely why collaborating couple Sam Goldberg’s (ex-Bodega, Bionic) and Samantha Terry’s sultry see-through soundtracks make you wanna kick it even in too-hot-to-fuck weather. Is it the combination of dark beats and shimmering acoustic guitars? The interplay between Goldberg’s slightly sinister Floyd-ish psych-pop and the tension in Terry’s bloodless baby-girl vocals? Who cares? This set of summery pop chills like making out with ice cubes in your mouth, and that’s a good thing. Hawaii get it on at their CD release party Saturday (July 5) at the Rivoli.
