Honest Ed’s sign sale: Part 2

Marked by its eternally flashing lights and adorned with jokes fit for 80th birthday parties, Torontos iconic bargain circus Honest Eds will be deeply missed when it closes for good in December, 2016.

Last year, the store offered buyers a piece of Ed Mirvish nostalgia to call their own when their kitschy hand-painted signs went on sale for one day only. The hugely successful event resulted in unprecedented lines around the block, and weeks later the coveted graphic posters from the world famous bargain centre were, funnily, reselling at high prices on eBay.

Now theres good news for those who missed out, and bad news for anyone who bought a sign off eBay: On Saturday, April 11, the sale returns once again.

The trademark red and blue signs are produced in house by loyal designers Doug Kerr and Wayne Reuben, a tradition that began when the store first opened in 1948 (Reuben got his start at the store in 67). As both a relic of retro-serifed artisan design and the bygone age when a tin of sardines didnt cost you your trousers, the signs are collectible gems for any Torontonian wishing to hold onto a remnant from the beloved landmark.

Ranging in prices from $1 to $100 and capped at a limit of three per customer, expect the competition to be fierce when the doors open at 8 am. The Mirvish marketing department even recommends you bring you own lunch and dinner this from a store that gives turkeys away for free every Christmas? Better heed their advice.
