Add one more to the stories you didn’t learn in history class. In 1914, a ship carrying 376 immigrants from British India was turned back when it arrived in Vancouver. As British subjects, the migrants felt entitled to land. As Indians, they were held offshore for months, eventually at gunpoint.
Documentarian Ali Kazimi (Narmada: A Valley Rises) comes at the story through Canada’s current treatment of immigrants. Ninety years later, Vancouver is still a flashpoint for xenophobia, and Kazimi sets the film within that rich context of old and new fears. He also goes hunting for forgotten archival footage. Continuous Journey opens the second annual Spinningwheel Festival on Friday (November 5, at the ROM), then plays next week at the Bloor starting November 10.
