An Indigenous food market is serving up delicious dishes and treats at a Toronto landmark once a week throughout the summer.

The Dashmaawaan Bemaadjinzin (They Feed the People) Indigenous food market has returned for a second year to the Fort York National Historic Site (100 Garrison Rd.). The Indigenous-led market will be at the site every Thursday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. throughout the summer.

The market offers a unique style of Indigenous fusions and street-style food. The menu can change every week, but some popular dishes that the market has served are the bison smash burger, maple sumac glazed chicken thighs and bison cannelloni.

New at the market this year is a takeaway menu where customers can bring home select dishes, including dips, salads, and homemade crackers.

Visitors can also check out the many vendor booths at the market which sell handcrafted items and products, including clothes, soaps, artwork, jewellery and more.

The market is cash only and dog-friendly. Visitors are invited to bring their own tupperware and reusable containers, but the market also has takeaway plates and packaging available for customers.

Dashmaawaan Bemaadzinjin was founded in June 2020 to provide healthy and fresh traditional Indigenous foods to local Elders and vulnerable community members. The Dashmaawaan team can also be seen throughout the city at various catering events, community gatherings, festivals and feasts.
