Inside Out

Rating: NNN

This is the collaborative product of drummer Barry Romberg, guitarist Lorne Lofsky and bassist Kieran Overs. It’s curious that these guys, who have each collaborated with some of jazz’s finest and contributed to some relatively avant-garde material, would release this straightforward improvisational jazz album. Lofsky’s Ed Bickert-like plucking takes centre stage, Romberg lightly teases the drum kit ,and Overs fills things out somewhere in the imperceptible lower registers of the sound. This is one of those albums that sound like one 56-minute track broken into eight. It’s easy, it’s breezy, it’s Inside Out. At one point it seemed like they were veering into some edgier stuff, but then I realized that it was just Romberg’s Web site streaming its own music in the background. Inside Out release What Is This Thing? at the Rex Hotel tonight (Thursday, July 8).
