After 10 years of releasing out-there music by noise, punk and indie bands like the Soupcans, the Pink Noise, Bile Sister, Bwana, New Horizzzons, Wolfcow and Man Made Hill, DIY label Inyrdisk is calling it quits. Despite growing the label from a local underground scene fixture to one with international scope, founder Kevin Hainey says shifting trends in technology away from Inyrdisk’s chosen format – CDs and CDRs – have made the venture untenable.
“The CDR format has lost its appeal except to a very small niche of extremist collectors,” he tells NOW. “The kids want tapes and records now. CDs and CDRs have become passé, at least in North America, and the CDR format has become very frustrating to work with, since even the most dependable brands have lost their dependability. Someday I’d consider doing a strictly vinyl label, but only if the Canadian dollar and skyrocketing shipping costs take a turn for the better.”
The imprint’s final release is the four-disc compilation set Inyrdisk Death Match featuring mostly exclusive tracks from artists who have worked with the label over the years. A launch party and panel discussion happen at Endless City (1161 Dundas West) on Thursday, February 25. The panel begins at 8 pm and will be moderated by Jesse Locke of Weird Canada and Aux. The concert starts at 9:30 pm and includes performances by Not the Wind, Not the Flag, Fleshtone Aura, Doom Tickler and Brothers in Milk. $8. inyrdisk.com.
