The Peel District School Board (PDSB) says “Islamophobia has not been confirmed” in relation to a hijab-wearing student being physically assaulted by another student in a Mississauga secondary school.
Footage of the assault circulated widely on social media on Wednesday, though the incident occurred in December 2022.
Canadians Against Oppression and Persecution shared the footage to their Twitter account, showing the teen being cornered and physically assaulted.
Many are calling on the school board to do more to protect their students.
A letter was sent to parents by the school’s principal, confirming the incident took place and condemning Islamophobia, but did not provide further details about the assault.
“The school completed its investigation… Further to the school’s investigation, Islamophobia has not been confirmed as related to this incident, however we recognize the impact the conduct portrayed in the video has had on the community,” the PDSB said in a statement to Now Toronto.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims called the video “disturbing,” and has reached out to both the victim of the assault and the school.
