Trading lines with Mary J. Blige at the end of Love Changes, Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx says, “I just wanna get back to basics – get back to lovin’, get back to sharin’…” He should focus on getting back to actin’ before we have time to remember his solo album too well, cuz after you get past the fact that, wow, the guy can also sing, there isn’t much left to these boring mid-tempo sex jams. Considering Foxx’s roots as a comedian, one might think he’d put a satirical spin on a genre that, despite R. Kelly’s twisted antics, is begging hard for comic relief. With the exception of Three Letter Word, where we learn just how horny Foxx is, this is a dry affair dominated by standard-issue R&B production monotony, and an egregious misuse of resources. There’s a cameo, but no beat, from pal Kanye West and a lame interlude cameo courtesy of Common. Even tackier, Foxx’s Oscar win is often noted. I guess no dearth of Grammy nods will take that from him.
