Jerkfest just announced this year’s soca headliner for its weekend Caribbean Nights as none other than Soca singer songwriter Destra.

The 22nd International Jerk Food and Music Festival, powered by TD, featuring Trinidad’s Queen of Bacchanal, Destra is taking place from Aug. 11-13 at Centennial Park in Etobicoke.

Destra joins R&B headliner, the legendary Johnny Gill on Aug. 11, and Reggae-Roots icon Luciano on Saturday and Sunday.

JerkFest is an annual event celebrating jerk cuisine and Caribbean culture organized by not-for-profit organization Caribbean Promotions Arts & Culture Inc.

This year, before the annual festival, a TD JerkFest Boat Cruise with a meet and greet with the headliners is happening on Aug. 10.

Destra began making waves in the music industry in the early 2000s, and in 2003 she released her first album Red, White, Black, which included her hit duet “It’s Carnival” with fellow Soca artist Machel Montano.

“It’s Carnival” is an anthem of not only the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival but widely known throughout the Caribbean and the world.

The Soca Queen has shared the stage with Sean Paul, Shaggy, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige and Beyonce, and in 2014 and 2015 Destra won Best International Act at the Black Canadian Awards.

The vibey event will also include various activities for the whole family to enjoy, along with several Caribbean vendors.

“We’re extremely excited about this year’s TD JerkFest lineup! There is something for everyone – and still more announcements to come – bring your family to Centennial Park and enjoy Caribbean culture without having to book a flight and pack a suitcase,” Anthony Plummer, founder and executive director of Caribbean Promotions Arts and Culture Inc., said in a release on Monday.

Last year’s Jerkfest was its first in-person festival since COVID-19 and experienced a record-breaking attendance of over 20,000 people on Saturday alone.
