Joel Plaskett

Rating: NN

Right from the first shaky-cam seconds of Joel Plaskett’s Make A Little Noise DVD, you get the sense that the East Coast indie rock heartthrob is trying to pull off an amateur fan-shot comp akin to the Beastie Boys’ new Awesome: I Fuckin’ Shot That! concert flick. Sadly, Plaskett’s product isn’t a collaborative effort between artist and audience — it’s just poor-quality, badly lit footage of the frontman and his pals giving their all onstage. A DIY aesthetic can be cool, but Make A Little Noise verges on unwatchable. The unfortunate thing about the DVD, which combines clips from a full-band Emergency gig at Halifax’s Marquee and a stripped-down acoustic set in Toronto, is that the sound quality is pretty decent, which only exacerbates the frustration of squinting at flickery, blurry Plaskett silhouettes — you wish they’d paid as much attention to shooting the package as they did to recording it. Comparing insane Haligonian crowds and more subdued T.O. punters is kinda fun, though, and watching Plaskett’s changing hairstyles throughout the 10 music videos included is hilarious.
