Kathryn Borel Jr., author of Corked: A Memoir

Party survival tips from Kathryn Borel Jr, the author of Corked, a wine-themed memoir. [rssbreak]

Party survival secret?

Whether I’m hosting or attending, I hang around the kitchen. Standing in there guarantees an influx and exodus of people, so there are always fresh people to talk to and things to fiddle with (limes to cut, drinks to mix) should the conversation become tedious.

What do you bring with you to every party no matter what?

A stack of weird business cards. Every year I make up a new set of business cards with fake titles like Kathryn Borel: Mayor of Awesometown or Best Rapper Alive. It’s a good prop to fill an awkward silence and/or a (relatively) non-tacky way of giving some babe your contact information.

What’s your preferred party attire?

Onion sack clothing (very breathable) or jeans and a blazer and a pair of pumps.

Favourite party track?

Anything by the Wu-Tang Clan. Or Prince.

Sign of a good party?

It sounds flaky, but good vibes. When you’re putting together your guest list, make sure you have a good contingent of gracious, dynamic people who aren’t going to stand there and let others do the heavy conversational lifting. Also, don’t invite too many drunks.

Sign of a bad party?

Not enough booze. People will always, always, always drink more than they bring. You should have a cache of wine and emergency 26-ouncers: vodka, gin, bourbon. That way you’re not desperately pulling out Dr. McGillicuddy fireball whisky or decades-old crème de menthe at 1 am.
