Killing Joke

Killing Joke (Columbia/Sony) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

I wasn’t expecting much from the new Killing Joke disc, but, damn, Jaz Coleman, Geordie Walker, Youth and Raven have come back hard. Bringing in Dave Grohl as drum basher might seem like an odd choice considering the beef between Killing Joke and Nirvana over the uncredited use of The Eighties, for which the Jokesters exacted payment in Kurt Cobain’s teeth, but the hard-pounding Grohl fits in amazingly well with their monstrous goth-metal attack. Along with the vaguely Middle Eastern sonic allusions, Killing Joke don’t scrimp on the booming anthems. When it comes to apocalyptic bellowing, it’s hard to top Coleman on a self-righteous rampage. Thanks to the Iraq invasion, he’s ranting at his raging best. Very impressive.
