Instead of the expected scattershot of dance-floor joints, the long-overdue debut from James Murphy’s LCD Soundsystem project turns out to be a much more thoughtfully constructed album in the traditional rock sense of the term. It kicks off in a thumping Fall-like frenzy with Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, in which Murphy gets to blurt Mark E. Smith-style nonsense over a raucous rumble, then shifts rapidly through a series of styles, rhythms and tempos, briefly taking a detour into Pink Floyd’s Mettle territory before winding up with some dirty disco pounding. Nothing here can touch their early singles – Losing My Edge remains the unchallenged peak – but it’s far from a disappointment.
