They don’t come any more locavore than week-old Tea ‘n’ Bannock (1294 Gerrard E, at Greenwood, 416-825-0636, teanbannock.wordpress.com), Toronto’s first aboriginal café and coffeehouse.
Located ironically on the edge of Gerrard Street’s Little India, the week-old lunch spot features a limited card of dishes based on the scone-like flatbread, whether sliced and studded with raisins ($1 for two) or pan-fried and topped with luncheon meat ($3.50).
There’s even something they call an Indian taco ($10). Topped with ground beef, tomatoes and mozzarella, Indian pizza might be a more accurate description.
And don’t miss the corn soup ($4), a hearty mix of hominy and pork hock that’s a kissing cousin to Mexican pozole.
Open Tuesday to Friday 11 am to 7 pm, Saturday noon to 7 pm. Closed Sunday, Monday, holidays. Unlicensed. Access: barrier-free, washrooms in basement.
