Oh, Liz, why hast thou forsaken me? You were once a trash-mouthed bad girl whose ingenious songwriting inspired other girls with so-so singing voices to wail on electric guitars and launch a feminist rock revolution. I was less impressed by the perky melodies on your last disc but chalked it up to the glow of new motherhood. But, jeez, Liz! I didn’t wait half a decade for you to reincarnate yourself as a generic radio-friendly pop tart. Your lyrics are just plain insipid, and there’s not a single original hook. This shit makes Avril look creative. Just between us girls, choose your collaborators more wisely. Pete Yorn? And, honey, using The Matrix might’ve seemed like a good idea, but Why Can’t I sounds like a lame Complicated rewrite. Sigh.
