M83

Rating: NNNN

French shoegazer dream-pop duo M83 are down to just one guy now, Anthony Gonzalez, but the sound is as huge as ever. This, M83’s third album, is one of those rare spacey drone-pop discs that refuse to play politely in the background. The My Bloody Valentine influence is clearly evident, but sonically Gonzalez has far surpassed Kevin Shields’s attempts to integrate dozens of layers and textures into a supernatural, glittering pudding of sound. This is what Spiritualized might have achieved if they’d spent less time doing drugs and more making music. Pretty, but not polite and predictable.
