Magneta Lane

Rating: NNN

Lexi Valentine, the frontwoman of garage-rock attack force Magneta Lane, has a voice that conjures up Debbie Harry at her alternately sneering and warbling best. Valentine’s vocals are the local trio’s secret weapon, winding coquettishly around dirty bass lines, straightforward rhythms and jangly guitars. This short debut, produced without excess frippery by the Uncut’s Jon Drew, is loaded with promise. The sing-along hooks and Strokes-y riffs of the insanely catchy title track make it one of the pop songs of the year, and Their Party Days hits the perfect balance of sweet melodies and low-end punk rock grime, but the rest of the songs are too similar to pack the same oomph. Magneta Lane are new enough to be finding their sea legs – can’t wait to hear them in a year. Magneta Lane snarl prettily at Paper Bag’s birthday party at Lee’s Palace tonight (Thursday, September 30).
